History and Structure

The Central Region of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors (AAPC - www.aapc.org) was formed in 1978, 15 years after the formation of the national organization. The region includes the states of Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin, and the province of Manitoba. As a geographical subgroup within AAPC, all members of AAPC within this area belong to Central Region as well.

The region meets each fall for two days of fellowship, continuing education, spiritual renewal, and an organizational meeting. Smaller geographical groups are formed around the region to provide on-going professional fellowship and support for members.

Historically, Central Region has been one of the strongest regions in AAPC. The region boasts 300 members, 6 accredited service centers, and 5 nationally recognized training programs. Many of the early founders of AAPC and five recent presidents of AAPC were from this region, and the next president of AAPC is also one of our own.

The central Region's affairs are handled by the Executive Committee. This committee is composed of the four regional officers (Chair, Vice-chair, Secretary and Treasurer), the chairperson of each standing committee, and the newsletter editor. It meets at least twice a year, in late winter and at the regional meeting each fall. Elections are held at the Central Region meeting.

Standing committees include Leadership Development, Theological and Social Concerns, Certification, Institutional Accreditation, Formation, Parish Concerns, and Ethics.
